The European Union will benefit from the accession the Eurozone of as many Member States as possible, said the President of the Bulgarian Parliament Tsveta Karayancheva in Brussels during the Interparliamentary Conference on Stability, Economic Coordination and Governance in the European Union.
Tsveta Karayancheva and the President of the European Parliament Antonio Tajani, opened and co-chaired the plenary session dedicated to “Strengthening resilience and stabilisation in the EMU”. The forum constitutes the third event of the calendar of the Parliamentary Dimension of the Bulgarian Presidency of the Council of the EU and the first one to be hosted at the European Parliament.
What unites us today are the joint efforts of the parliaments of the European Union to contribute to the financial stability and the sustainable development of the Union's economy, noted the President of the National Assembly.
The Speaker of the Parliament appealed for solidarity and unity, and pointed out that it is not by chance that our country has chosen as a slogan for its Presidency the words written on the building of the Bulgarian Parliament: "United We Stand Strong!”
One of the priorities of the European Union as a whole, as well as of the Bulgarian Presidency, is the reduction of economic and social disparities between and within the Member States, said the President of the National Assembly and called for preserving the Cohesion Policy’s place into the general EU budget beyond 2020.
The debate on the future of the EU is highlighted by the Bulgarian Presidency, and an important part of this debate is the issue of the Multiannual Financial Framework 2021-2027; the deepening of integration in the euro area and the strategic vision for the EU’s economic governance, Karayancheva said.
During its rotating Presidency of the Council of the EU, Bulgaria is working and will work for the further integration of the Economic and Monetary Union, stated the President of the Bulgarian Parliament.This process goes hand in hand with the democratic accountability of the euro zone institutions in front of the legitimately elected representatives of the parliaments of the Union, added Karayancheva. She said that among the key issues for both the institutions and the citizens is the future of EU finances after the United Kingdom leaves the Union in 2019. Karayancheva welcomed the efforts of both the Bulgarian Presidency and the Member States, as well as the European institutions, to make progress on reducing the risks in the banking sector.
At the opening of the forum, the President of the European Parliament Antonio Tajani stressed that national parliaments play a key role in bringing EU policies closer to the citizens. We need to find a way to strengthen the credibility of the EU and its institutions, we must present a vision for the future of Europe and take appropriate action in the name of the prosperity of all European citizens," he said.
Antonio Tajani stressed that the EP will continue to assert its role and will thoroughly carry out its work as a fully-fledged co-legislator. We are accountable to European citizens to monitor the work of the European Commission, he added, and noted that parliaments are the link between citizens and the executive power. This year is the seventh edition of the European Parliamentary Week, which is the largest interparliamentary event, said that President of the European Parliament. Its goal is to make national parliaments more involved in policy-making.
