From 21 to 25 May 2018, the National Military University in Veliko Tarnovo hosts the 4th edition of the Common Defence and Security Policy (CSDP) Olympiad. The event is organised in the context of the Bulgarian contribution to the European Initiative for the Exchange of Young Officers inspired by the Erasmus programme. Its main goal is to acquaint the cadets of European military academies, schools and educational institutions with knowledge on CSDP in order to write a paper on the European Common Security and Defence Policy.
The official opening of the Olympiad, which is part of the calendar of the Bulgarian Presidency of the Council of the European Union, is held on 22 May 2018 at the House of Culture in the National Military University in Veliko Tarnovo. Among the participants in the Olympiad are 38 cadets from 28 military academies and universities of the European Union member states. Bulgaria will be represented by Cadet Sergeant Major Stiliyan Slavchev from the “Vasil Levski” National Military University and Cadet Dimitar Stoykov from the “N.Y.Vaptsarov” Naval Academy.
The pre-competition phase involves a presentation of essays by the cadets. A commission manned by representatives of military academies, universities and ministries of defence of the European states will evaluate the papers and will select the ten best essays. The Olympiad also involves team and individual CSDP knowledge competitions.
The award ceremony in the respective categories will be held during the official Olympiad closing ceremony on 25 May 2018 at the “Vasil Levski” National Military University’s House of Culture.
